ITINERARY
Day 1: Darwin to Sandy Creek Falls
154km (C)
Following a morning trip briefing in Darwin, we head south and leave the bitumen behind as we enter Litchfield National Park. The drive takes us along a rough track through bushland and open country, with changing scenery along the way. We arrive at Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek Falls) shortly after lunch, giving us time to set up camp and enjoy a swim in the plunge pool beneath the falls.
Day 2: Sandy Creek Falls to Grove Hill
143km (B)
We continue south along the Reynolds River, tackling a series of creek crossings and rugged sections that offer a fun challenge for drivers. The journey is as thrilling as it is scenic. Mid-morning, we reach the enchanting Surprise Creek Falls—perfect for a refreshing swim. After lunch, we leave Litchfield National Park behind and head east through historic gold mining country, arriving at our overnight stop in Grove Hill, rich with outback character.
Day 3: Grove Hill to Victoria River
345km (C D R)
We begin the day tracing the path of the iconic Ghan Railway southward, soaking in the sense of history that runs alongside the tracks. Soon we join the Stuart Highway, heading deeper into the Territory’s vast interior. Before leaving civilisation behind, we make a pit stop in our last major town for a while—time to top up supplies, refuel, and grab anything we might’ve forgotten. From here, it’s a long stretch westward to Victoria River, where the landscape opens up and the outback truly begins to show its scale.
Day 4: Victoria River to Fig Tree Yard
151km (B)
An early start is well worth it to catch the sunrise on the escarpment walk, with sweeping views that make the effort worthwhile. After breakfast, we travel into Judbarra / Gregory National Park and visit the historic Bullita Homestead, a glimpse into the region’s pastoral past. From there, we continue deeper into the park, arriving at our bush camp at Fig Tree Yard for a quiet night under the stars.
Day 5: Fig Tree Yard to Kalkarinji
189km (C)
Today’s drive is a cracker. We spend the whole day navigating tight 4WD tracks—rocky, sandy and muddy, with plenty of river crossings to keep things interesting. It’s proper Territory travel at its best. Around lunchtime, we pull up at a favourite spot where we usually land a barra or two, so chances are it’ll be fresh fish on the BBQ tonight. The afternoon stretch continues through some of the NT’s finest off-road terrain before we roll into Kalkarinji for our overnight camp—and yep, barra for dinner.
Day 6: Kalkarinji to Nicholson River
370km (B)
After a quick stop at the Kalkarinji Community store for fuel and supplies, we head west onto the Buntine Highway—one of the north’s classic cattle routes. The drive today is cruisy, much like Day 3, as we pass through sweeping grasslands and wide-open country. We’re deep in the heart of the Territory’s cattle belt, and the change of pace is welcome after yesterday’s rugged tracks. As the afternoon sun stretches across the horizon, we cross into Western Australia and roll into camp beside the Nicholson River.
Day 7: Nicholson River to Lake Argyle Village
188km (C M R)
It’s a shorter drive today, so we hit the road early to make the most of the afternoon at Lake Argyle. Along the way, there are a few sights worth stopping for, with the changing landscape hinting at the Kimberley ahead. Once we reach Lake Argyle Village, there’s time to explore the area or simply unwind. A sunset tour on the lake is the perfect way to wrap up the day—calm waters, golden light and a chance to spot local wildlife.
Day 8: Lake Argyle Village to El Questro
173km (C D R)
We set our sights on the legendary El Questro Station today. After leaving Lake Argyle, we roll into Kununurra for a bit of a wander—time to grab fresh produce, top up supplies and restock the beer. Once we’re fuelled up, we cross the mighty Ord River and cruise west along the bitumen for about half an hour. Then it’s onto the eastern end of the Gibb River Road, where the corrugations kick in and the outback driving gets real. Before long, we pull into El Questro, ready to settle in and soak up the Kimberley vibes.
Day 9: El Questro – Free Day
0km (C M R)
There’s plenty to do at El Questro, or nothing at all if that’s more your style. You can soak up the serenity, explore scenic walking trails or take on some of the station’s 4WD tracks. For those keen to see the Kimberley from a different angle, there’s a range of tours on offer—from heart-pumping helicopter flights to laid-back boat cruises through ancient gorges. However you spend the day, El Questro delivers.
Day 10: El Questro to Barnett River
339km (C M R)
After a well-earned sleep-in and a relaxed breakfast, we head west, deeper into the heart of the Kimberley. The Gibb River Road delivers once again—stunning views, fun river crossings and endless photo ops. It’s the kind of day where you’ll want to stop often, just to take it all in. The landscape shifts and stretches as we travel, showcasing the raw beauty of one of Australia’s most iconic regions. By late afternoon, we reach our camp on the banks of the Barnett River, ready to unwind under a Kimberley sky.
Day 11: Barnett River to Windjana Gorge
213km (C)
We continue west along the Gibb River Road, winding through the rugged beauty of the King Leopold Ranges. The scenery here is some of the most striking in Western Australia—towering escarpments, deep valleys and endless horizons. It’s a day of relaxed travel and big views. By late afternoon, we arrive at Windjana Gorge, a place steeped in geological and cultural significance. There are bushwalks to explore and tours available for those keen to learn more about the area’s history and wildlife.
Day 12: Windjana Gorge to Camballin
283km (B)
We head south toward Tunnel Creek, a remarkable spot where water has carved a passage straight through the limestone hill. If conditions are right and the water level’s low enough, we can walk—or even swim—through the tunnel from one end to the other. After lunch and a short stretch on the blacktop, we follow the Fitzroy River through open country to our bush camp near the Fitzroy River Barrage, where the outback quiet settles in for the night.
Day 13: Camballin to Banana Well
317km (C)
We follow the Fitzroy River a little further, passing through the remnants of the Camballin Irrigation Project—a bold vision from the past now reclaimed by the bush. After rejoining the Number One Highway, we cruise past a few well-known landmarks and soak up the changing scenery. By afternoon, it’s back onto sandy tracks for some proper four-wheel driving, kicking up dust and testing our skills before reaching our overnight camp at Banana Well.
Day 14: Banana Well to Broome
133km (C D R)
The final leg is a cruisy run into Broome, with time to take in the sights along the way. As we roll into town, there’s a chance to explore the local highlights—maybe a stroll through Chinatown, a visit to Town Beach or a look at the famous pearling history. Tonight, we gather for a farewell dinner at the historic Roebuck Bay Hotel, sharing stories, laughs and a toast to an unforgettable adventure through the Top End and Kimberley.
