The Canning Stock Route, or CSR, is the last great off-road drive. With over 1600km between towns, this is as remote as adventure four-wheel driving gets. We take a maximum of 10 tagalongs on this trip, so it’s first in best dressed. The first couple of days are a warm-up for what’s to come. After day two from Broome, we hit the sand and the adventure begins. Each night we camp by a well or waterhole, giving you a chance to have a shower then retire around the campfire.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Broome to Cambalin
291km (B)
We begin our journey on sealed roads, cruising through open country with time to settle into the rhythm of the outback. Most of today’s driving is on the blacktop. It’s a good time to relax and get ready for an incredible trip across the deserts. Soon, we leave the bitumen behind and head into the vast Australia interior, following the historic Canning Stock Route—a track that winds through remote desert country and carries stories of Australia’s pioneering past.
Day 2: Cambalin to Cherrabun
175km (B)
Today’s drive is entirely off-road, with sandy sections giving us a good chance to test our vehicles. We arrive at Cherrabun Station by late afternoon and generally gather around the fire for a hearty cook-up. It’s a relaxed evening with plenty of chances to swap camp oven tips.
Day 3: Cherrabun to Halls Creek
293km (C D R)
We reach Halls Creek around midday, giving everyone time to sort out last-minute issues and stock up on fresh produce. It’s also our final fuel stop before heading deep into the CSR. We meet up for dinner at the tavern and prepare for the days ahead.
Day 4: Halls Creek to Wolfe Creek Crater
152km (B)
A shorter day allows time for any vehicle tweaks before we hit the track. We depart around lunchtime and arrive at Wolfe Creek Crater mid-afternoon. There’s time to set up camp and explore the rim of this massive meteorite impact site.
Day 5: Wolfe Creek Crater to Well 49
215km (B)
Our first official day on the CSR begins with a stop at Billiluna Aboriginal Community mid-morning—our last chance to grab an ice cream or a few treats before heading off-grid.
We pass Well 51 and the going gets sandier. A short detour takes us to Well 50, then we settle in for the night near Well 49, camping in a quiet, shaded grove.
Day 6: Well 49 to Well 44
162km (B)
We start with a visit to the restored Well 49, then continue south past the Breadon Hills. The track becomes rocky in places, and we take time to explore several wells. At Well 46, we top up our water before reaching camp.
Day 7: Well 44 to Well 39
158km (B)
Dunes grow taller as we push deeper into the desert. After crossing Lake Guli, the track twists through sand ridges and salt pans. We pass Lake Tobin and settle in just shy of Well 39 for the night.
Day 8: Well 39 to Well 33
161km (B)
Leaving the Great Sandy Desert behind, we enter the Gibson Desert. The track is a mix of soft sand, rocky sections and winding tracks keeping drivers busy. We camp at Kunawarritji Community, where there’s a small store and a chance to refuel and restock.
Day 9: Well 33 to Well 27
188km (B)
With tanks full and supplies topped up, we continue south. The track is mixed with rocks and sand. We camp near Well 27, surrounded by quiet desert country.
Day 10: Well 27 to Georgia Bore
113km (B)
We stop at Well 26 to refill water, then tackle more dunes before reaching the Talawanna Track. From here, the driving is easier. We arrive at Georgia Bore, where we’ll stay for two nights.
Day 11: Georgia Bore Free Day
0km (B)
A rest day to catch up on washing, vehicle checks or simply relax. It’s also worth taking a moment to sort your gear, repack the vehicle and check everything’s running smoothly.
Day 12: Spare Day
(B)
This day is reserved as an emergency catch-up window—ideal if we’ve hit delays or if any vehicles need major repairs. There’s also the option to head into Newman Township to restock, grab essentials, or take a breather before we continue the journey.
Day 13: Georgia Bore to Durba Springs
182km (B)
We cross into the Little Sandy Desert and on to Lake Disappointment. After crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, we tackle more sand before turning off the CSR to reach Durba Springs—a lush oasis where we’ll stay for two nights.
Day 14
Durba Springs Free Day (B)
If you’re into photography, this area is absolutely incredible. Near the campsites, you’ll find drovers’ initials and ancient rock paintings carved into the gorge walls, adding rich layers of history to your shots.
Day 15; Durba Springs to Well 15
76km (B)
We’re entering the final stretch of the Canning Stock Route—no more free days until Perth, so make the most of today’s calm pace. The drive is gentle, giving us time to soak in the last of the sweeping dune country before settling into camp. Well 15 offers a reliable supply of fresh water, perfect for topping up tanks.
Day 16: Well 15 to Well 12
71km (B)
Another gentle day on the track, with chances to spot camels and enjoy the solitude. We camp near Well 12, surrounded by open desert.
Day 17: Well 12 to Well 6
135km (B)
Signs of civilisation begin to appear as we approach Wiluna. We camp at Pierre Spring near the restored Well 6—a peaceful spot with plenty of space.
Day 18
Well 6 to Well 3 126km (B)
We travel through station country today, with open views and smoother tracks. Make the most of this final full day on the Canning Stock Route—tomorrow brings bitumen, road signs and a return to civilisation. Tonight’s camp is at Well 3, our final stop on the CSR.
Day 19: Well 3 to Wiluna
138km (C D R)
Today marks the final leg of the legendary Canning Stock Route—an extraordinary achievement. You’ve crossed the longest stock route on Earth, and now it’s time to reflect on the journey. As we approach Wiluna, expect your phone to spring back to life with messages and emails. There’s a chance to grab a well-earned ice cream while we refuel and restock the esky with fresh ice. A short drive later, we reach our overnight camp—no cooking tonight, just a shared home-cooked dinner.
Day 20: Wiluna to Lake Moore
572km (B)
Today’s a long haul, but the roads are smooth and dune-free, making for steady progress. As towns begin to flicker past and road signs multiply, we gently transition from the wild to the familiar. Tonight marks our final bush camp—a special one. With a roaring fire, shared stories, and a sky full of stars, we take a moment to reflect on the vast beauty we’ve travelled through.
Day 21: Lake Moore to Perth
370km (C D R)
The last leg of the Canning journey is a smooth mix of off-road and sealed highway as we make our way into Perth. We pause at Noble Falls for a relaxed lunch, before descending the Darling Scarp and re-entering suburbia—complete with traffic lights and phone reception. Tonight, we gather for a farewell dinner—a chance to share stories and mark the end of a remarkable journey.
